About the Artist

I am a traditionally trained artist (New York Academy of Art, New York Studio School) with a passion for drawing and its materials. For me, the touch of a pencil or tip of an ink-dipped brush against the grain of paper, creating both mark and representation, is so much a part of the magic of picture-making. I've chosen trees and related natural forms as my subject matter because they can say so much; whether they are expressive proxies of the human figure, or just their own miraculous selves, they invite for me a feeling of deep connectedness - not only to my subject, but to the process of drawing, itself.

I almost always listen to music while I'm working (or doing pretty much anything else, really), and there is something about pulling an ink line while listening to a clarinet or horn solo that feels like a sort of camaraderie. I love so many kinds of music; the shaking lushness of a conductor-led orchestra, the nodding and glancing nuances of a small ensemble, the subtleties within a single instrument playing a song... what I want to show you here is most akin to the last of these. These pictures are my songs.
